Five ways to study
- Study: flip cards at your own pace. The back shows every reading and the meaning.
- Quiz: four choices, one right answer. Pinyin distractors never share the right answer’s sound, so you can’t pass on tones alone.
- Type: type the meaning, the pinyin or the characters. Tones are optional, but if you type them (
hao3orhǎo) they have to be right. - Match: pair characters with their pinyin or meaning, four at a time.
- Review: the whole level in one grid, with each character linked to its stroke order.
Each level is split into sets of 25 characters, the same sets as the stroke order pages. Learn to write a set, then drill it here.
HSK 3.0 characters by level
HSK 3.0, the standard introduced in 2021, is the first version of the exam with an official character list: 3,000 characters across nine levels. Levels 1 to 6 add 300 characters each, and the advanced band (levels 7 to 9) adds the last 1,200 as a single list.
HSK 2.0 characters by level
The six-level HSK 2.0 exam defines only word lists, so its character sets are derived from them: each character belongs to the first level whose words use it. Many textbooks and courses still follow these levels.
