About this chart

HSK 1 is the start of the elementary band. Its characters cover the building blocks of everyday Chinese: numbers and dates, people and family, common verbs like 是, 有, 去 and 吃, and the question words you need to ask simple questions. Many of them (人, 口, 大, 木) are also components that turn up inside harder characters later.

The characters are grouped into the same sets of 25 used by the flashcards and stroke order pages, so you can print the chart, work through one set at a time, and tick it off as you go.

Cover the pinyin and test yourself, then drill the ones you miss with the HSK 1 character flashcards. To learn to write them, use the HSK 1 practice sheets and the stroke order animations.
